The PlanB tablet project partnered with the loko ia (fishponds) and entered into the Purple Prize. The PURPLE PRIZE is a contest for all ages, designed to tap into Hawaiʻi’s creative resources to spur creativity and innovation and accelerate the rate of positive change with the goal in mind of encouraging collaboration between our local technical community and a community of cultural practitioners. PlanB’s entry was built off tablet based data technology to enhance the loko ia restoration and conservation. During the contest, our Director of Environmental Consulting, John Burns, built the online data visualization system using Elastic software and with support from Amazon.
In October 2017, we were selected as finalists, made the final four group, and ended up winning the contest for ‘In Flight’ projects and received a prize of $12,000! We plan to use this money to cover software updates and licensing for this group, and continue to develop the data visualization infrastructure.
