Starting in May 2016, PlanB Consultancy will be providing Biota monitoring services to the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA). NELHA was established by the State of Hawaii to manage and operate a facility for research and development of natural energy, aquaculture and ocean related technology, and business enterprises. PlanB will conduct assessments of benthic habitat and fish assemblages along the nearshore coastline surrounding the NELHA facilities. Anachialine Pond surveys will also be completed at fifteen sites throughout the NELHA property. Benthic habitat survey techniques include use of mounted underwater cameras using high resolution digital photography to capture the occurrence of all invertebrate species and characterization the substrate composition on the ocean floor. Fish assemblage survey techniques involve a visual fish census to estimate the abundance of biomass of fish present. Pond surveys will consist of counts of motile species and estimates of benthic algal cover. The annual Biota monitoring provides valuable data for tracking any changes occurring to the marine and terrestrial environment surrounding NELHA.
